THE GRAN CHACO REGION

The Chaco region is very sparsely populated due to its geographical location and climate. The climate of this region differs depending on location, closer to the Paraguay river, the terrain becomes very wet and covered with dense jungle, but father to the north-west, the land is very arid with minimal rainfall. The southern portion has very firtile soil that can cultivate crops such as the Yerba Mate. Also this portion has a large amount of trees which are harvested and even used to make a fragrance of soap (wiki). This firtile region only occupies about one third of the entire region. Since the northern portion is much more dry, the soil is not as fertile and does not produce crops as abundantly. The Gran Chaco takes up 250,001 sq mi and is divided between Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina, and a small part of Brazil.
